Since I'm basically a ridiculous lurker and never post anything, I thought why not copy [personal profile] resonant 's meme and introduce myself?

If you want to participate, share this in your own space so your followers can get to know you.

Call me ...
exceptinsects, or Jenny (she)

Other things I've been known as (that I'm willing to share) ...
I've been exceptinsects pretty much from the get-go--1998 or 99 at least

A bit about my nonfannish life ...
I'm a librarian in San Diego!  I'm single, mostly(?) straight, and I don't have cats, children or any other vertebrates living with me.

A bit about my fannish life ...
I love reading fic but I d'on't write any.
I'm a author fan more than a fandom fan, although I did first get into reading fanfic through my desperate love of the X-Files.  That somehow led into Star Wars (Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan years) and Voyager, then Sentinel and Due South, where I started reading people like [personal profile] helenish and [personal profile] cesperanza  and [personal profile] resonant , and followed them into popslash and SGA with occasional Harry Potter detours. Of all that, Harry Potter is the only one where I have any real familiarity with the source material! One place I have not followed, however, is Supernatural.  It just never worked for me.
Lately I've been dragged into Teen Wolf and hockey RPF and yet again have never watched any of either.  Although now I know a lot of Hockey Words...but I'm not quite sure how the sport is actually played.  It's kind of like...soccer on ice?  I think?

Things I'm super-enthusiastic about ...
Reading, cooking, baking (thank you [personal profile] toft for introducing me to the Great British Bake-off!), eating in general, and wandering around in cities.  I grew up in a very small town but I am a city person through and through.

I just realized that this is what I need to get me through the rest of this stupid sniffly cold.
Is there such a beast? I don't even care what fandom.

Five questions from [personal profile] busaikko , who is doing a giving-people-questions meme.

Three really good books you'd recommend!
Agh, there are so many!  but recently I've been on a Pageturners of Yesteryear kick, so...
Trustee from the Toolroom by Nevil Shute
The Far Pavilions by M. M. Kaye
The Queen's Gambit by Walter Tevis

What book did you read as a child that really affected you as a person?
Got to be The Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Death by Daniel Pinkwater.  It was one of the first things I read where I just completely agreed with the entire sensibility of the author and seriously felt like I was not alone in my particular flavor of weirdness!

What's something that you've always wanted to do or try, and you're working to make that happen?

Wow, such a good question!  For the past few years I've kind of been thinking about learning to do some woodworking, and just today a friend of a friend said she was taking a wood shop class and there might still be time to sign up!  So I'm going to see if I can join.

What question do you wish people would ask you (but they never do)?
Ha!  I'd like a guy that I was interested in to ask me out on a date. :-)
I've at least progressed(?) to where completely inappropriate men ask me out, so I guess that's something. :-/

(And bonus: the question that people always ask me and I wish they wouldn't--"So, are there still going to be libraries now with the whole ebook thing?")

You're the DJ at your reunion/commitment ceremony/birthday/other major life event. What's the playlist?
Well clearly Party Hard by Andrew WK would start off the evening...the sweet romantic slow dance would be Beyond the Blue by Joan Armatrading...then we would really get down with Whoo! Alright - Yeah...Uh Huh. by the Rapture and Danza Kuduro by Don Omar...and then we'd take it back with something everyone secretly loves like Bust a Move or Poison...

If anyone wants to meme with me, leave a comment saying so and I'll think up some questions....

(1) Tell me about one of your superstitions, if you have them.
I am superstitious about many things, in spite of (because of?) being an atheist. One of them is that when you go over a cattle crossing or a railroad track in a car, you have to lift your feet. If not, Dire Things will occur. If you miss one, though, you can fix it by doing the next one.

(2) What's your favorite love song?
Chariots Rise, by Lizzie West. (O, sigh)

(3) If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one ability or quality, what would it be?
Oh, wow. I think I would have to go with flying.

(4) Describe one of the best days you've ever had.
Okay, well, as a rule I am not the outdoorsy type, but sometimes my mom will persuade me to go on one of her backpacking trips in the High Sierra.
Right, so one year we went, and I was hiking with two family friends, a boy about my age and his grandfather, who are two of the more interesting people I know, and we had a long and convivial conversation as we went along.
And then, at the end of the hike we came out at this tiny lake right under the sky, with a view all down the mountain and into the land beyond, and these clouds that you could almost reach. It felt like any moment gravity could reverse itself and I might just float off into the air.

(5) What fandom do you most enjoy, and why?
Hm, this is a difficult one. In general, whatever fandom my favorite writers are writing in, since I'm really more of a fan of the fanfiction itself rather than the source in most cases.
But, I especially like SGA because of all the wacky AUs. (They're dog walkers! or musicians! or chefs! LOVE IT ALL.)

I don't know if anyone really reads this, but hey if you do and you want me to ask you some questions, go ahead and comment!  Questions are awesome.

I was working at the library yesterday, and a lady came in with a shirt on that said (in Japanese script, which I can read) "WATASHI (heart) YAOI".

Me: "Oh, cool shirt"

Her: "Oh thanks!  I have no idea what it says though, I think it means I like some particular kind of anime, but I don't know what kind."

Me: "Oh, really? Huh."

These are the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing's users (as of today). As usual, bold what you have read, italicise what you started but couldn't finish, and strike through what you couldn't stand. The numbers after each one are the number of LT users who used the tag of that book.

I know I've read either Love in the Time of Cholera or One Hundred Years of Solitude, but I can never remember which one.

him: Stickler for hyphens, eh? Can I say that I'm not TOTALLY surprised?

me: (falls about laughing)
I probably over-use the hyphen, it's true.

him: Well, for a woman obsessed with serial commas, a HYPHEN, in all its intrusive glory, must be irresistible.

me: ahem. sometimes a hyphen is just a hyphen...

him: Or a long, sleek DASH--

me: you mean...an EM-dash?

So basically, I just randomly go and friend people who I think are interesting, so I can find them again. I hope this isn't violating some kind of LJ manners.
I don't really write things on here because I'm lazy, and also I don't have a whole lot to talk about.
So if you find I friended you, don't feel obliged to reciprocate at all, I won't be offended.
